PHLUSH Guest Blog Post Guidelines

Our organization welcomes contributions from anyone who is interested in or knowledgeable about issues related to public restroom access, emergency sanitation, and/or sanitation justice. PHLUSH has a variety of visitors to our site; thus, a breadth of topics is appropriate for sharing with this community of readers. However, we do request that some content and formatting guidelines be followed for blog posts to be approved for publishing at PHLUSH.org.

CONTENT

  • Content must fit into the three categories listed above. Ecological sanitation content is also accepted, as these topics overlap with the principles of emergency sanitation.
  • Blog posts may be opinion/editorial, announcements of events, cultural/artistic representations of sanitation issues, or informative/scientific in nature. The latter (informative/scientific) are the majority of our posts, and these tend to be specific and supported by peer-reviewed literature or reputable journalism sources.
  • See examples of different types of posts.
  • There are limited promotional opportunities on our blog on a case-by-case basis. We generally do not focus on promoting businesses or other websites unless they are directly correlated with our mission and vision.
  • If there are any photos of people where their faces are clear and their identities are recognizable, they need to sign the consent form to have their photos on the website

FORMATTING

  • Length: As a general guideline, op/eds, announcements, or cultural articles (which tend to have lots of photographs) are around 500 words. Informative and scientific articles average 1,000-1,500 words. This is not a strict guideline, but short, succinct posts are more likely to have an impact and greater readership.
  • Photos: At a minimum, one or two photos are recommended per post. All photos must be legally acquired or belong to the author. Some good resources for stock photos include Dreamstime.com, Shutterstock.com, Unsplash.com, Pexels.com, or iStockphoto.com. Please let us know if you are having trouble finding stock photos for your post.
  • Citations: We require citations for all stated facts within a blog post. If a statement has a separate/original source, it must be cited. Please include all citations as links directly within the text (ex: Google.com. No footnotes or bibliographies, please)
