Straight from New York City, The POOP Project is coming to Portland!
How do you break the potty taboo and catalyze creative conversation about sustainable sanitation for the person, planet and world community? The People’s Own Organic Power (POOP) Project has been showing us how, using a brilliant combination of theater, art, and education.
The POOP Project has played to sold-out crowds in the New York International Fringe Festival (Award Winner: Overall Excellence in Solo Performance), the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival (“The most important show in the Fringe…ahead of its time,” says The Scotsman), and at the United Nations for the inaugural World Toilet Day in 2013.
In the past year alone, The POOP Project has visited over a dozen universities across the US, worked with refugees in Greece, and performed in India. This marks their first visit to Portland.
At last! We’ve been waiting for a decade to welcome POOP Project founder Shawn Shafner.
PHLUSH President Kyle Earlywine first met Shafner at the 2010 World Toilet Summit. Both Vice President Hayley Joyell Smith and Board Secretary Abby have arranged performances by Shafner on their university campuses. Now The POOP Project founder is coming to Portland.

Flush – The Documentary screens at 2 pm.
Flush, the surprising story of what happens after we “go,” is changing the way we think about waste. Director Karina Mangu-Ward has a hunch that the unprecedented damage from Superstorm Sandy, drought in the West, and the future of our food supply have a lot to do with how we flush. So she gives herself a challenge: follow one flush from beginning to end. Flush also delves into the cultural, political, and corporate forces shaping the way we deal with bodily waste in America today. A panel following the 54-minute documentary features these WASH experts: Laura Allen of Greywater Action; Sandra Comstock of Hygiene4All; Nicole Cousino of Nature Commode; Ole Ersson of Kailash EcoVillage; and Pat Lando of Recode.

From communal Roman toilets to the Queen who banished the bowel movement, Shafner unearths the origins of our dis-ease. In this stand-up comedy / TED-style lecture / character-shifting solo play, he exposes how current sanitary practices threaten our health, environment, and 40% of the world still living without safe toilets. Shafner invites us to get our sh*t together before it hits the fan.
