The Art of Natural Resource Cycles

Update: Works by Cloacina and other artist-scientist teams who exhibited at Arizona P Summit appear on PBS!
Editor’s Note: When we heard that Portlanders Molly Danielsson and Mathew Lippincott were being honored with an exhibit of their work in Phoenix, we asked them to tell us about it.
We’re dedicated to explaining natural resource cycles and developing alternatives to sewers. Our first project is on exhibit this Friday in Phoenix, six posters explaining the nitrogen cycle, aerobic decomposition, prominent decomposers, Portland’s sewers and composting systems, and toilets of the world.

The original goache paintings have been selected to be part of an exhibit on the importance of phosphorous to sustainability, a commonly overlooked problem.  This special exhibit in conjunction with the Sustainable Phosphorus Summit will showcase works by 20 teams of artists and scientists in all sorts of media. Phosphorous is necessary to make cell walls.  We can’t exist without phosphorous and current mining practices to add it back to our agricultural process are destroying and depleting our reserves. It’s a hard subject to fire people up about so it’ll be exciting to see how the different artists bring such a dense subject to life for viewers.
The show is February 5, 2011 in the Boppart Courtyard of  the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona.  from noon-7pm with a reception from 5-7pm.  A second showing will be held at Step Gallery, ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Tempe, Arizona February 14-18th. Citations for our posters can be found here.  We hope you find them educational but not heavy handed in the approach to a topic with many strong opinions.

Molly Danielsson and Mathew Lippincott are artists and founders of the Cloacina Project which seeks to create open source ecological alternatives to waterborne sewage in the urban West based on science and research instead of fear and ignorance. Mathew and Molly live in Portland, Oregon.  Molly and Mathew are currently working to develop portable ecological sanitation set ups for special events and festivals.
Editor’s Note: The set of six posters are available for purchase for $7.
